Acai palm is a multi-trunked palm tree native to South and Central America. Its scientific name is Euterpe oleracea. The fruit is a small deep purple berry type fruit resembling a grape. Acai has a large seed and not much pulp. The seed is not edible. It is from this pulp that its nutritional value is derived. The fruit pulp contains about 4% protein , 12% lipids and a very high fiber content.(3) Other nutrients include calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, zinc, vitamins A, C, and E, but what really qualifies Acai as a Superfruit is its amazing antioxidant profile.(1)

The amino acid profile of Acia pulp is almost identical to that of an egg. The difference is an egg has slightly more metionine and lisine and Acai has slightly more phenylalanine and treonine.(1)

The Acai berry also contains several beneficial fatty acids. The saturated fat content of Acai is low and comes mainly from palmitic acid. Mono-unsaturated fat is unusually high for a fruit and comes from oleic acid, an Omega-9 fat. Poly-unsaturated fat is from linoleic acid, an Omega-6 fat. There are traces of linolenic acid, an Omega-3 fat in Acai pulp, however Acai is not considered a good source of Omega-3s. It should be noted that the oleic acid content of Acai is the same as in olive oil.(1)

As stated above, it is the antioxidants contained in Acai that make it a Superfruit, and is the reason this fruit is included in the Eiro formula. Acai berry contains several anthocyanins, proanthocyanidins and other flavonoids. Anthocyanins are pigments that give the ripe fruit its purple color. They are also potent antioxidants. One proanthocyanidin contained in Acai is resveratrol. Resveratrol is the antioxidant contained in red wine that is believed to convey its beneficial effect. Other anthocyanins contained in Acai inhibit cyclooxygenase (COX-1 & COX-2) which could explain the anti-inflammatory effect attributed to Acai.(2) Other antioxidants contained in Acai are in the form of Sterols, Tocopherols/Tocotrienols, and Carotenoids. Although Acai does contain beta-carotene (a carotenoid), the amount is small. It is the other compounds mentioned above that make Acai shine. The Vitamin E (a tocopherol) content of Acai is very high with the predominant form as alpha, but also containing some beta and gamma forms. Acai also contains beta-tocotrienol which is the most potent antioxidant form of Vitamin E. Of the sterols, the predominant form contained in Acai is Beta-sitosterol. Beta-sitosterol will be the topic of another post, but lets just say that this compound is believed to give Acai its cholesterol lowering effect.(3)*

When you add up all the anthocyanins, proanthocyanidins and flavonoids, and the sterols, tocopherols, and carotenoids, Acai comes up with the highest ORAC value found to date among edible fruits.(2) Is it any wonder why Eiro Research included this fruit in its formula?
